where movement meets memory - and becoming unfolds quietly
“Dive Into the In-Betweens” is an immersive installation that explores migration through the lens of in-betweenness, as a condition of suspension, fragmentation, and constant becoming.
Developed as part of the ECHO Academy Programme, the project emerges from its philosophy of using design and creative practice as tools for social engagement, dialogue, and meaningful change. Rather than approaching migration through data, policies or raw images, “Dive Into the In-Betweens” focuses on its emotional and psychological reality: the feeling of being suspended between a past you cannot return to, a present you cannot fully enter, and a future still forming.
The installation unfolds across three interconnected rooms, each representing a temporal and emotional state: the past memories, the present heterotopias, and possible becomings. Visitors are invited to move through these spaces not as observers, but as participants, encountering partial access, blurred boundaries, and moments of reflection that mirror the lived experience of migration. Through spatial design, sound, light, and materiality, the work seeks to make in-betweenness felt, rather than explained.
At the core of the installation lies a simple yet powerful idea: that identity -not as a documentation paper but as the core of who we are- is not a fixed point, but a process shaped by memory, displacement, adaptation, and shared presence. By placing visitors within states of liminality, the project invites empathy, introspection, and a reconsideration of belonging, not as something resolved, but as something continually negotiated.
“Dive Into the In-Betweens” is powered by DE/MO Foundation and BIOS Athens, whose ongoing support enables experimental, socially engaged artistic practices to take shape in public and cultural spaces.
The installation will be open to the public on Friday, January 23rd, after 18:00, at Romantso Athens.
